The 16-day-old strike by Gaza’s hospital janitorial staff had closed at least one hospital there. But the strike has now been suspended — because the workers are negotiating with the Palestinian Authority (PA) to pay them.
But if the negotiations don’t work out over the next two weeks, they will strike again.
Meanwhile, all Gazan government employees, including at schools, went on strike on Monday to protest their own non-payment of salaries and benefits.
On Monday, all government institutions in Gaza and public schools were shut down.
The protesters are noting that it has been months since the supposed reconciliation agreement between Hamas and the PA — whereby Mahmoud Abbas’ government promised to take over Hamas-run institutions. But, the protestors claim, things are worse now than they were before.
Furthermore, UNRWA contract employees — mostly engineers — are protesting a decision not to renew their contracts. So they are shutting down UNRWA facilities in Gaza, as well.
But the mainstream media hasn’t reported about the closures or strikes at all.
Why? Because the only news about Gaza that wire services will report is news that includes the word “Israel.”
