Actress and film director Amber Tamblyn came under fire for blasting Hasidic Jewish men on Sunday on Twitter after talking about a harrowing ordeal in Brooklyn.

Tamblyn, 34, tweeted on Sunday that a “Hasidic man” in a grey van tried to hit her and her baby daughter, Marlow, as they were crossing a street in Brooklyn that day. She added that the driver was “honking and touching [Marlow’s] stroller with the car’s bumper,” and she asked her followers to help identify the man. Tamblyn, who is married to Jewish comedian David Cross, said she and her daughter were “very shaken, but we’re okay” after the experience.

She then added, “this is not the first time a man from the Hasidic community in NYC has attempted to harm me or other women I know. Any woman riding a bike through South Williamsburg can attest. I hope this guy is caught.”

The actress’ final comments garnered criticism by some Twitter users who accused the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” star, and prominent advocate of the Time’s Up movement, of “vilifying the Hasidic community,” being a bigot and making “racist” assumptions. One social media user wrote, “it is irresponsible to spread blame for the action of one individual across an entire community,” while another said, “Racial profiling is loathsome. Would you say this about any other ethnic group? The community did not do it. One guy did. Leave the community alone.”

One person tweeted, “I don’t understand your tweets. For someone who is so politically woke, I don’t understand your generalizations of the Hasidic Jewish community. It sounds racist.”

Tamblyn soon after defended herself against her critics on Monday and said on Twitter that she “will not be bullied or intimidated” by those calling her antisemitic for her comments about the Hassidic Jewish community in Brooklyn.

“I’ll say this once. To anyone suggesting I’m antisemitic for identifying a man as Hasidic who hit my daughter’s stroller in a crosswalk with a car then rolled his window down, wagged his finger and told me ‘Watch where you’re going’: I will not be bullied or intimidated by you,” she wrote, adding that she has faced similar experiences with “several Hasidic men in the 10 years (she’s) lived in New York.”

“I said nothing that implied I was talking about ALL Hasidim. Have a good night,” she concluded.

Tamblyn has not yet reported the incident to the New York Police Department, according to TMZ.
