Israel’s recent official acknowledgement that it bombed a Syrian nuclear reactor in 2007 sent a clear deterrent message to the Jewish state’s enemies, the IDF chief of staff said in a Makor Rishon interview, an excerpt of which was published on Wednesday.
Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot told the Hebrew-language weekly newspaper, “I thought of the way this was interpreted in Syria and other places, including Iran. Our enemies now know that we will not permit an existential threat to hang over us.”
“The State of Israel developed over the years a concept that it’s also implemented — when a nuclear reactor was built in Iraq, it was destroyed. When a nuclear reactor was built in Syria, it was destroyed. That is to say, there is a message here that is also true today for our enemies — the State of Israel will not allow the building of capabilities to create an existential threat to it.”
