Jewish critics of US President Donald Trump should acknowledge the good his administration has done on a number of Israel-related issues, the editor-in-chief of The Algemeiner said in a recent television appearance.
Speaking as a member of a JBS discussion panel, Dovid Efune stated, “I think the unfortunate reality is that today we’re seeing an environment that entails what you might call the politicization of everything. If you talk about Reform Jews, right, the reason they hate Trump is not because of his views on Israel. There are a whole lot of other issues that are much higher up on their checklist which influences their perspective on the American president. And I think, yes, part of overcoming the politicization of everything…and this polarization that we see as a result of it is, yes, listening to the other side, engaging with the other side, and respecting the person with the other view, even if you don’t respect the view, but also trying to take a slightly more nuanced approach and recognizing that no one person is all bad or all good.”
Efune continued: “And, yes, while one might have criticism of the president, to recognize that on certain issues, issues of very broad consensus, he has been the best president that we have ever had, and I’m talking about the issue of Jerusalem, which is a bipartisan issue for Jews in this country and in Israel. I’m talking about the issue of Iran, which is a bipartisan issue of concern for Jews in this country and in Israel. The issue of payments to terrorists, another bipartisan issue. And, of course, the bias against Israel at the United Nations, where we have seen an unprecedented approach from the US administration.”
“So for liberal Jews to come and say, ‘Listen, we have a lot of problems with the president, we have political problems, we have problems with his approach to antisemitism, but we appreciate and respect this work that he has done,’ I think this would help to tone down the conversation a notch,” Efune pointed out.
