Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei may remove Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps commander Qasem Soleimani, Israeli media reported on Saturday.
Citing an Iranian news website, the Hebrew-language outlet Walla stated that Khameini is disturbed by “differences between [Soleimani] and other senior commanders.”
Soleimani is considered one of the most formidable — and dangerous — military leaders in the Middle East. He is head of the Qods Force, an elite section of the IRGC responsible for extraterritorial operations, including acts of terrorism. He has been personally sanctioned by the US.
He is believed to have overseen Iranian interventions in Syria and Iraq, among other places. He has repeatedly threatened to annihilate Israel.
Walla also reports that, as part of an ongoing power struggle, Khamenei is contemplating dissolving the Qods force and merging it with the IRGC.
