JNS.org – In a meeting with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas urged Latin American countries not to move their countries’ Israeli embassies to Jerusalem.
“We hope that some countries across Latin America will not go moving their embassies to Jerusalem because that is against international law,” he told Maduro in Caracas.
The statement came as Paraguay said it would be moving its embassy to Jerusalem later this month. Paraguay’s announcement followed that of Guatemala, whose President, Jimmy Morales, will inaugurate its new embassy in Jerusalem’s Malha Technological Park two days after America’s May 14 Jerusalem embassy inauguration in the Arnona neighborhood.
Last month, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at least six countries were considering moving their Israeli embassies to Jerusalem.
Also in April, the Honduran parliament passed a non-binding resolution calling to move its country’s embassy to Jerusalem; Czech President Milos Zeman announced his country was starting to take steps to relocating; and Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancilas began the process of moving her country’s embassy to Jerusalem as well.
