The protests appeared to be part of renewed social unrest in the Islamic Republic. A wave of demonstrations in December 2017-January 2018 rattled the regime and got international media attention, but there have been few major disturbances reported in recent months.
Regime-sanctioned events in Iran often include chants of “Death to America!” and “Death to Israel!,” so the choice of the “Death to Palestine!” slogan by demonstrators was likely meant to signal their displeasure with Iran’s financial and military backing of anti-Israel terrorist groups, including Hezbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
On Sunday, the Iranian rial fell to a record low against the US dollar on the unofficial market, Reuters reported.
