During a phone call with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison revealed he was thinking about recognizing Jerusalem as the Jewish state’s capital and moving his country’s embassy there from Tel Aviv, according to Netanyahu.
Netanyahu later took to Twitter to thank Morrison — the head of Australia’s Liberal Party who became prime minister in August — for the consideration.
I spoke today with Australian PM @ScottMorrisonMP. He informed me that he is considering officially recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel & moving the Australian embassy to Jerusalem. I’m very thankful to him for this. We will continue to strengthen ties between ?? & ??!

The Israeli prime minister’s office said the two leaders also discussed “steps to continue strengthening bilateral relations.”
The United States recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital late last year and relocated its embassy there in mid-May. Guatemala subsequently followed America’s lead.
