The head of Israel’s Military Intelligence Directorate told a Knesset committee on Tuesday that the chances of a full-scale war were low, but the regional situation remained extremely volatile.
Speaking at a Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee meeting, Maj. Gen. Tamir Hyman described the current state of affairs in the Middle East as highly dynamic, calling it “an era of disruption, design, and formation,” the Hebrew news site Walla reported.
Pointing to the ongoing effort to detect and destroy tunnels dug under the Israel-Lebanon border, Hyman remarked that while Hezbollah had substantial firepower and there was potential for escalation, the Shi’a proxy of the Tehran regime lacked the industrial capacity to manufacture precision weapons.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has charged that precision weapons factories have been built in Lebanon with Iranian assistance, and he has called them a red line for Israel.
On the issue of Iranian entrenchment in Syria, Hyman said that Israel was determined to keep Iran and Hezbollah away from its border. He also revealed that Tehran’s presence in Syria was controversial among the Iranian leadership itself, and therefore could potentially be contained.
