The two Israeli soldiers who were killed in Thursday’s Palestinian shooting attack in the West Bank — 20-year-old Yovel Mor Yosef of Ashkelon and 19-year-old Yosef Cohen of Beit Shemesh — were laid to rest on Friday.

Mor Yosef was buried in the military cemetery in his hometown. His father, Mordechai, eulogized his son, remembering him as a “fun child, a child of Torah, a child of respect for parents, a child of society.”

“You came into this world to help others,” he continued. “I ask one thing — do not stop helping in the world to come.”

Mor Yosef’s girlfriend, Michal, said, “My head will not understand and my heart will not stop feeling the pain, love, regret, worry, anger. I was right when I thought you were the love of my life. You ended your life with the greatest love there is. You were so young and just next month you were supposed to celebrate your 21st birthday. It is not sinking in, my love, you were just a child. Who is this lowly murderous terrorist who took you from me? My warrior.”

Cohen’s funeral took place at the Mount of Olives cemetery in Jerusalem.

“Yosef, sweet boy, righteous boy, I never believed that this moment would ever come,” his stepfather, Rabbi Eliyahu Merav said. “We all believe that God gives and God takes away, but we didn’t know, we didn’t believe, we never thought. How many years did I raise you, a wonderful child, holy, pure, full of love.”

Cohen’s mother said, “I received a wonderful gift for 19-and-a-half years.” She recalled his visit home last Shabbat, during which he expressed thanks for “the right to defend the people of Israel with love and joy.”

“I believe he faithfully fulfilled his mission,” she added.

Both fallen soldiers were members of the Kfir Brigade’s Netzah Yehuda Battalion.
