Some of the most valued soldiers in the Jerusalem branch of the Israeli Border Police are not even human.

As the Hebrew news site Mako reported on Monday, these soldiers are the dogs who make up the Border Police’s canine unit. Since it was established in 1992, the dogs have helped locate weapons, money, drugs and people, including wanted suspects.

The canine unit has 25 soldiers who work with 43 dogs, and a new special training program is underway to upgrade the unit’s capabilities. The training was documented by Sgt. Adi Felix, who served in the unit as a dog trainer for a decade.

One Border Police officer, quoted anonymously, explained, “Beyond our ongoing activities and operations, it’s very important to protect our dogs and their masters. We learn lessons and improve from every event that happens on the ground.”

“The unit works around the clock in many areas,” the officer added. “Most of the activity is focused on Jerusalem and its environs, but often in other places, according to the needs of the Israel Police. We’re talking about a unit with major accomplishments.”

The dogs, he said, “have helped capture top terrorists, members of criminal organizations, and locate massive amounts of weapons and drugs. They also do holy work in finding missing people and have saved many lives.”
