British Prime Minister Theresa May took a verbal jab at opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn’s sympathies for terror groups on Wednesday, during a bitter parliamentary debate about the ongoing crisis over Brexit — the UK’s departure from the European Union, scheduled for March 29.
“He [Corbyn] has been willing to sit down with Hamas, Hezbollah and the IRA [Irish Republican Army] without preconditions, yet he won’t meet me to talk about Brexit,” May told the House of Commons in her weekly Prime Minister’s Questions session.
Following last week’s unprecedented defeat of her government’s Brexit plan by Parliament, May has been soliciting input from other political parties on the next steps forward. Corbyn, the head of the Labour Party, has refused to meet with May over the crisis until she gives a guarantee that the UK will not exit the EU without a negotiated deal, a task that will become more pressing as the March 29 Brexit date approaches.

Corbyn’s spokesperson later denounced May’s comment as “demeaning.” The Labour chief’s poor relationship with the British Jewish community and the continuing scandals over antisemitism in his party have been regular targets for May in her parliamentary exchanges with him.
In 2009, Corbyn referred to Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist organization that rules Gaza, and Hezbollah, Iran’s Shi’a proxy terror group in Lebanon, as “friends” in a speech at a parliamentary meeting. He also shared a platform with Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal at a conference in Doha, Qatar, in 2012.
