Israeli Band of Musicians With Disabilities Sing Original Track in ‘Rising Star’ Competition Titled ‘I See Something Good in You’

The Shalva Band, an Israeli group comprised of musicians with disabilities, competed in the next round of the “Rising Star” competition on Monday with an original piece written by the ensemble’s lead singer.
Before taking the stage, the band met with the 2018 Eurovision winner, Israeli singer Netta Barzilai, and vocalist Anael said she wrote the song, titled “I See Something Good In You,” based on her own personal experiences.
She told Barzilai, “In high school I would hear a group of girls who said something like, ‘We want to go out.’ And then someone would say, ‘Let’s invite Anael.’ And someone else [said], ‘Wow, but I don’t feel like dragging her along.’ And it’s like, you feel like an object. You just stand there afterwards and look in the mirror, and you say, ‘Woah, like, ouch. What am I? What, I’m no good? I’m not pretty?’ Everyone’s experienced something like that. And our group also, with all the disabilities that we have.”
Anael concluded by saying, “‘I see in you something good, something close, that’s possible to love’ — that’s the chorus [of the song]. And essentially it’s about the girl that’s in the mirror.”
Shalva earned a score of 91 percent on Monday night for its performance of “I See Something Good In You.” If the band wins “Rising Star” it will represent Israel in the next Eurovision contest, which will be held in Tel Aviv in May. Barzilai won last year’s Eurovision competition in Lisbon with her song “Toy.”
