Commenting on a report on Thursday that the US had blocked a draft Security Council statement that would have expressed regret over the ejection of a foreign observer force from the West Bank city of Hebron, Israeli UN envoy Danny Danon said, “There is no place in Israel or anywhere in the world for an international force to harm the country in which it operates.”
“Instead of maintaining order and neutrality, TIPH (Temporary International Presence in Hebron) observers used violence, created friction with the civilian population, and interfered with security forces,” Danon charged. “The United States stands by Israel’s right to not renew TIPH’s mandate and to act on its own accord to ensure stability, without the help of a violent, biased international force.”
“That the Palestinians want to maintain violent observers in Hebron attests to their intentions,” the Israeli diplomat concluded.
Announcing the non-renewal of TIPH’s mandate late last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “We will not allow the continued presence of an international force that acts against us.”
