Foreign ministers from a number of Arab and European countries will meet with Palestinian officials in Dublin next week to discuss how to respond to US President Donald Trump’s yet-to-be-unveiled peace plan, an Israeli media outlet reported on Monday.
According to Israel’s Channel 13, the participants at the conference will discuss Palestinian “red lines” on issues such as borders and the status of Jerusalem.
The meeting will take place at the initiative of Ireland, which is noted as one of the strongest supporters of the Palestinians in the European Union. Attendees will include the foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority, as well as Ireland, France, Holland and Sweden.
“We want to sit with the Palestinians to talk with them about their stance toward Trump’s peace plan and ways to renew the peace process,” a diplomatic source told Channel 13. In particular, participants want to make the Palestinians “feel that they are not alone and they have the support of both Arab and European countries.”
Israel is aware of the upcoming conference and staunchly opposed to it. Referring to a recent Irish law that would criminalize trade with Israeli settlements, Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon asked how Ireland “can be a fair arbiter when it acts against Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East?”
Fox reported on Monday, citing sources in the Trump administration, that the US peace plan was essentially complete and would be revealed following the Israeli Knesset elections in April.
“The plan is done … [the president] is happy with the parameters of the deal,” a senior official was quoted as saying.
