US President Donald Trump on Friday weighed into the bitter debate in Congress over the antisemitic comments made by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), accusing the Democratic Party of becoming “an anti-Israel…anti-Jewish party.”
Trump said on Twitter that yesterday’s vote in the House on a watered-down antisemitism resolution, which left out all mention of Omar’s repeated claims that American Jewish supporters of Israel are guilty of dual loyalties, was a “disgrace.”
Speaking to reporters in the grounds of the White House, the President said: “I thought yesterday’s vote by the House was disgraceful, because it’s become — the Democrats have become an anti-Israel party. They’ve become an anti-Jewish party. And I thought that vote was a disgrace and so does everybody else if you get an honest answer.”
The resolution condemned the charge of dual loyalty against Jewish Americans, stating it “constitutes anti-Semitism because it suggests that Jewish citizens cannot be patriotic Americans and trusted neighbors, when Jews have loyally served our Nation every day.” But after lobbying from progressive Democrats, mention of Omar specifically was removed, while the text was revised to also condemn bigotry against Muslims as well as “Latinos, Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders, and the LGBT” community in addition to immigrants and people of color.
The measure passed on passed on Thursday night by a vote of 407-23. Opposing votes came exclusively from Republicans angered by the omission of a condemnation of Omar’s comments.
