Israel’s Foreign Ministry on Friday highlighted the existence of a “moral majority” at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), as it condemned the adoption by the council of a report accusing the Jewish state of crimes against humanity for its handling of violent riots on the border with the Hamas-rule Gaza Strip.
Twenty-three countries voted in favor of the measure, with eight opposing it. Another 15 countries abstained, while one was absent.
An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman remarked that Friday’s numbers showed there was a “moral majority” at the council opposed to its relentless campaign of resolutions condemning Israel.
“Dictatorships and hypocrites vote in favor of the singling out, absurd pro Hamas pro terror report,” Emmanuel Nahshon said. “We will not cooperate with this mockery and will keep protecting Israel and Israelis.”
Australia, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Fiji, Hungary, Togo and Ukraine all voted against the report’s adoption. Britain and Denmark, meanwhile, abstained — causing some consternation over the pledges both countries made the previous day to vote against resolutions introduced under the UNHRC’s notorious “Item 7,” a permanent agenda feature for the condemnation of Israel alone among the UN’s 193 member states.
The Gaza report was introduced under item 2 on the council’s agenda, however, and the UK and Danish delegations voted against all resolutions targeting Israel that were introduced under item 7.
In 4 other anti-Israeli resolutions adopted today by the ignominious @UN_HRC, these text all introduced under the anti-Israeli Agenda Item 7, #Australia, #Denmark & #Britain voted NO on all. An important statement to the world that it's time to #EndItem7. pic.twitter.com/ti8w2uShAu
