A court in Paris on Monday sentenced the French extreme right-wing activist Alain Soral to a year in prison for engaging in Holocaust denial — just four months after he received a similar sentence for antisemitic agitation.

Alain Soral — the owner of the ironically-named “Égalité et Réconciliation” (“Equality and Reconciliation”) website — was convicted for publishing an article denying the Holocaust by a lawyer named Damien Viguier, who was separately fined 5,000 euros ($5,650).

The International League Against Racism and Antisemitism (LICRA) praised the ruling, saying the decision to impose a prison sentence on Soral, who has been convicted for similar offenses in the past, shows the “exceptional character” of the decision.

Soral’s published vilification of Jews as “manipulative, domineering and hateful” was the basis for a one-year sentence he received in January. That followed the imposition of a 4,000 euro fine the previous month after Soral published a virulently antisemitic poster on his website.

Neither Soral nor Viguier were in court when the latest sentence was passed on Monday. A warrant has been issued for Soral’s arrest.

Originally a communist, the Swiss-born Soral crossed to the far-right National Front (FN) before carving out his own path in 2007. A purveyor of conspiracy theories about “Jewish” and “Zionist” power, Soral has for several years worked closely with Dieudonné M’bala M’bala, an antisemitic propagandist who presents himself as a comedian.

Last September, the pair traveled to North Korea to make an appearance at a “peace festival” in the totalitarian state.
