The number of physical assaults on Jews in the US more than doubled in 2018 from the previous year, according to a new report published by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) on Tuesday.
The ADL’s annual “Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents” tallied 39 physical assault cases with 59 victims last year, up from 19 cases with 21 victims in 2017.
Overall, the audit identified 1,879 occurrences of anti-Jewish assaults, harassment and vandalism across America in 2018 — down 5 percent from 2017, but still the third-highest total ever recorded by the ADL.
2018 saw the deadliest attack ever targeting American Jews, with the Tree of Life massacre in Pittsburgh — in which 11 people were murdered by a white supremacist gunman — taking place in October.
The ADL report was issued just three days after one person was killed in a shooting at a temple near San Diego.
“We’ve worked hard to push back against anti-Semitism, and succeeded in improving hate crime laws, and yet we continue to experience an alarmingly high number of antisemitic acts,” ADL CEO and National Director Jonathan Greenblatt, said in a statement. “We unfortunately saw this trend continue into 2019 with the tragic shooting at the Chabad synagogue in Poway. It’s clear we must remain vigilant in working to counter the threat of violent anti-Semitism and denounce it in all forms, wherever the source and regardless of the political affiliation of its proponents.”
