An estimated 250,000 people took part on Friday in Tel Aviv’s 21st annual Pride Parade.
The event — which draws LGBTQ+ tourists from around the world — was held this year under the banner of “The Fight for Equality.”
“I promise you we will not relent or give up, and we will continue to battle until we see full equality in the State of Israel,” Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai said in a speech before the parade got underway.
The march — the largest of its kind in the Middle East — wound its way from the center of the city to a park on the Mediterranean shoreline, where a massive beach party was held.
American actor Neil Patrick Harris — of “Doogie Howser, M.D.” and “How I Met Your Mother” fame — was in Tel Aviv this week to serve as the parade’s international ambassador.
According to a new survey conducted for the Hiddush NGO, 78% of Israeli Jewish adults believe same-sex couples should be permitted to marry (55%) or register their partnerships (23%). While neither option is currently legal in Israel, same-sex marriages performed abroad are recognized by the government.
