US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by telephone on Wednesday, and Iran was at the top of the agenda.
“The two leaders discussed cooperation between the United States and Israel in advancing shared national security interests, including efforts to prevent Iran’s malign actions in the region,” a White House statement said.
Netanyahu’s office noted that the Israeli prime minister had expressed “appreciation for President Trump’s intention to increase the sanctions on Iran.”
In a tweet on Wednesday, Trump warned that US sanctions on Iran would be increased “substantially” soon.
He also accused the Tehran regime of secretly enriching uranium in violation of the July 2015 nuclear agreement Iran reached with six world powers — a deal Trump pulled the US out of last year.
On Monday, in remarks delivered via a video feed to the annual Christians United for Israel (CUFI) summit in Washington, DC, Netanyahu said Iran was “trying to lash out to reduce the pressure” it was facing.
“They attack tankers, they down American drones, they’re firing missiles at their neighbors,” he stated. “It’s important to respond to these actions not by reducing the pressure, but by increasing the pressure.”
A day later, during a visit to an IAF base that is home to an F-35 stealth fighter squadron, Netanyahu commented, “Recently, Iran has been threatening the destruction of Israel. It would do well to remember that these planes can reach anywhere in the Middle East, including Iran and certainly Syria.”
