JNS.org – University of North Carolina – Following an order by the US Department of Education, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announced on Monday its expansion of anti-bias training, as well as its commitment to creating a campus “free from antisemitism and all forms of discrimination.”
Republican Rep. George Holding of North Carolina called for an investigation following a complaint about antisemitic posters that were found in the Walter Royal Davis Library and a Middle East Studies conference in March titled “Conflict Over Gaza: People, Politics and Possibilities,” which featured a Palestinian rapper accused of antisemitism.
In the agreement between the university and the Office for Civil Rights of the US Department of Education, UNC provided assurance that all actions taken in response to the complaint will be “consistent with the First Amendment of the US Constitution.”
The details of the agreement were sent in a campus-wide email that detailed updates to UNC’s “Policy on Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment and Related Misconduct.”
Changes include a statement to “reiterate its commitment to having an environment free from prohibited harassment, including but not limited to antisemitic harassment,” as well as a statement in the discrimination policy that could include a clear definition of antisemitism and must include how antisemitism can manifest itself at the university.
In the agreement, UNC agreed to host at least one meeting in each of the next school years for students, faculty and staff to discuss any harassment concerns, and promising to “take appropriate steps” to address any issues.
At any orientation and training sessions, the agreement stated, the university will request the vendor that provides the online training module to modify the training module to include a section on antisemitic harassment.
Previously, the Middle East Studies program has been federally investigated after finding that it promoted “positive aspects” of Islam, but not other religions.
