Yakup Barouh.

Yakup Barouh, who served as president of the Jewish community in Turkey in the early 1990s, has died. He was active in communal affairs for some time.

He was founder of an advertising firm and was one of the leaders of the modern day Turkish advertising industry.

He was also Turkish Representative for the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, as he helped increase business relations between Hong Kong and Turkey.

Barouh graduated from Saint Joseph High School in 1961, and received an undergraduate degree in 1967 from Istanbul Robert College and advanced business degree from the same institution the following year. He wrote his masters thesis on “Agency Structure in Advertising Industry in Turkey.”

In 1967, he established with others the Büro Pars Research Company, a market research consultancy. He wrote on advertising in Saban Business Magazine for four years.

He not only studied the history of advertising in Turkey, he was part of it. In 1971, Barouh joined as a partner in an advertising agency that had a storied history in Turkey, founded in 1909.

He was an early member of the International Advertising Association. He also was a member of the Advertising Association of Turkey, and held a seat on its board.

Barouh delivered lectures on advertising and had been teaching Brand Management at Yeditepe University since 2012.

He wrote a book called “DAHA DÜN GİBİ” (“Fresh Memories”). He won industry awards including the Crystal Apple Award, organized by the Turkish Association of Advertising Agencies. He likewise won a coveted Effie Award.

Fluent in several languages, Barouh leaves behind a wife, a son and four grandchildren.
