The ongoing Hamas terror offensive targeting Israel since Saturday has forced sports leagues to postpone their games across the Jewish state as the country remains under attack.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) announced on Sunday that it has postponed all matches scheduled in Israel over the next few weeks due to the violence, with new dates to be confirmed at a later date. The postponed matches include a European 2024 qualifier with Switzerland scheduled for Thursday in Tel Aviv, Israel’s European 2025 Under-21 Championship matches against Estonia on Oct. 12 and Germany on Oct. 17, and an under-17 Euro 2024 mini-qualifying tournament between Israel, Belgium, Gibraltar, and Wales set for Oct. 11-17.

The UEFA said it needs a few days to determine whether Israel’s European Qualifiers 2024 match in Kosovo on Oct. 15 can take place as planned.

“UEFA will continue to closely monitor the situation and will remain in contact with all teams involved before making decisions on new dates and on potential changes to other upcoming fixtures,” the soccer governing body added.

The Hapoel Tel Aviv soccer team revealed on Instagram that its former player Lior Assulin and youth coach Alon Shamli were both killed by Hamas terrorists.

Israel’s major basketball and soccer leagues have also postponed or moved games because of the raging Hamas war, which has resulted in over 900 Israeli deaths since the terrorist organization’s initial attack on Saturday morning.

Basketball games in the Eurocup between Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv and Wolves Vilnius scheduled for Wednesday, and the Euroleague game a day later between Playtika Tel Aviv and EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, “have been suspended following the terror attacks and onset of armed conflict in Israel,” Euroleague Basketball announced on Sunday. It also expressed “our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and all those affected by the ongoing tragedy.”

Euroleague Basketball said on Monday that the BKT EuroCup round 3 game between Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv and Umana Reyer Venice, scheduled for Oct. 17, will be played in Venice instead of Tel Aviv, while the round 12 game will be played in Tel Aviv. The Turkish Airlines EuroLeague round 3 game between Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv and Valencia Basket, scheduled for Oct. 18, will be played in Valencia instead of Tel Aviv, while the round 32 game will be played in Tel Aviv.

Israel’s Maccabi Ra’anana basketball team will still play an exhibition game against the Brooklyn Nets in New York that is scheduled for Thursday.

Two women’s Euro 2024 qualifiers in handball involving Israel’s national team — matches against Slovakia scheduled for Wednesday and Germany on Saturday — will also not take place as scheduled “as a result of the terrible developments in Israel,” the European Handball Federation announced.
