Hamas has confirmed the death of Salah al-Arouri, the deputy head of Hamas’ political bureau, along with the death of two more officials following a drone strike in Beirut.
Based in Lebanon, al-Arouri, 57, was a top leader of the Palestinian terrorist group and considered the de facto chief of Hamas’ military wing in the West Bank.
“Saleh Arouri is not just the highest profile strike by Israel against a top Hamas official since October 7th. Arouri was widely seen as the closest Hamas official to Iran,” said political analyst David Makovsky on Twitter/X. “His death is a huge loss to the Iran-Hamas relationship. (Hamas has wanted all the benefits of ties with Iran like money, weapons and training while seeking operational independence and not being a proxy along the lines of Hizbullah.)”
While the circumstances surrounding the explosion are currently under investigation, initial reports from the Lebanese state news agency suggest that six other people were killed and several wounded in in the blast.
According to local sources, the Hamas official was purportedly the target of the explosion. The Da’aheh district, where the incident occurred, is integral to Hezbollah’s influence in the region, adding complexity to an already tense situation.
Hezbollah, the Iran-backed terrorist group based in Lebanon, has been clashing with Israeli forces to Israel’s north while the Jewish state fights Hamas to its south. Hamas has officials based in Lebanon.
