The Islamic State (ISIS) on Thursday claimed responsibility for two explosions in the southeastern Iranian city of Kerman that left dozens dead and scores injured.
The terrorist group posted a statement on its Telegram channel saying it was behind the attack, which according to Iranian authorities killed 84 people and wounded another 284.
On Wednesday, the explosions devastated a ceremony to commemorate Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who was killed by a US drone strike in Iraq in 2020. As chief commander of the elite Quds force — the overseas arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a US-designated terrorist organization — Soleimani was responsible for Iran’s proxies and terror operations abroad. He was revered among supporters of the Iranian regime.
Iranian leaders vowed revenge for the bombing.
“Cruel criminals must know that they will be strongly dealt with from now on,” Iran’s so-called “supreme leader,” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said in a statement.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi called the attack a “heinous and inhumane crime.”
American officials believe that ISIS was most likely behind Wednesday’s attack in Iran based on conclusions drawn from a preliminary US intelligence assessment, the New York Times reported.
The US intelligence community has consistently described Iran as the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism.
